Certificate requirements
1) Obtain a total of 24 credits or more, including a total of 8 credits or more in Advanced Courses A* and Advanced Courses B (but at least 4 credits should be from Advanced Courses B), and 16 credits for thesis research (8 credits each from the supervisor and co-supervisor). Any credits that the student earned while being enrolled in a doctoral programme at the GSE before starting the Top Global Course can be counted.
2) Obtain two credits from one of the Advanced Courses A, including (i) courses offered at a partner university that has an international student exchange agreement with the Graduate School of Economics or Kyoto University; or (ii) International Collaborative Courses that take place at Kyoto University and are offered by GSE professors in collaboration with a guest scholar or lecturer from another country.
3) Conduct research activities at a partner university or other institution located outside Japan for at least three months.
4) Work under the guidance and supervision of at least one International Supervisor** as part of the supervisory agreement created by the student and the International Supervisor.
5) Give an academic presentation at an international conference at least on two separate occasions and obtain two credits from Advanced Course B’s “International Academic Presentation” course. An international conference organized at Kyoto University can be counted but at least one of the presentations must be given at an international conference or meeting held outside Kyoto University.
6) Pass doctoral thesis examination.
* Students can count the following credits as part of Advanced Courses A; (i) surplus of credits (over 12 credits) earned from Core Courses; (ii) credits from subjects that are not included in the course list of the EA Programme but offered at the Graduate School of Economics, (iii) credits from subjects offered at other graduate schools at Kyoto University.
** International Supervisor can be an AGST project professor or a scholar who belongs to a university or institution located outside Japan.
How to complete the programme
1) Students must fulfill the course requirements as listed above.
2) Submit a copy of academic transcript and Form C by the end of April of each year (See Course calendar).
3) Students must confirm their International Supervisor by submitting Form D and E no later than one year following the Course commencement. A student who starts the Course in April must make his/her final decision about his/her International Supervisor by the following March at the latest. This decision cannot be changed afterwards, meaning that any changes to the International Supervisor must be done before March.
4) There is no deadline to complete the overseas research and international conference components that are required to complete the Course. While it is up to the student when s/he completes these components, s/he is encouraged to manage their time and schedule appropriately.
5) Students should be mindful that Forms F, G, H and I are due by the end of June of his/her third school year.
