Research Field, Activities and Interests

My research aims at investigating various aspects of Japanese women’s education and work in the modern period, especially in connexion with urban culture. The specific topics that I have focused on include modern spaces (the street and ‘its extensions’ such as department stores, movie theaters, restaurants, cafes, dance halls, etc.), modern life (modan raifu) and the production/consumption of culture, the relationship between the sexes and the transformations of gender norms, the emergence of new forms of femininity (the ‘good wife and wise mother’, the new woman, the modern girl, the café waitress).
